Tags¶
Tags are the fundamental data storage mechanism in Wood InsightsPlatform (WIP). They play a crucial role in maintaining both the current and historical values of various types of data, which can include measured, filtered, or calculated data, as well as data quality.
What is a Tag?¶
A tag is a data entity used to store information about specific type of data. This information can include:
Measured Data: Direct readings from sensors or instruments.
Filtered Data: Data that has been processed to remove noise or irrelevant information.
Calculated Data: Data derived from mathematical computations or algorithms.
Data Quality: Information about the quality and reliability of the data.
Timestamp: Information about the date and time associated with the data.
Utalising Tags¶
Tags are accessible throughout the WIP application. This means that various services and features within the application can retrieve and use the data stored in tags. Some of the key services that utilise tags include:
Events and Notifications: Tags help in tracking and recording events based on specific data conditions. Tags enable the system to send alerts or notifications when certain criteria are met.
Flowsheets: Tags provide the necessary data to populate flowsheets. Flowsheets use tags to get input for performing various calculations or data manipulation. Flowsheets then output the calculated values back to tags.
Dashboards and Reports: Dashboards serve as the primary tool for displaying tag values, offering a visual representation of the data. Tags are also used in generating reports, providing detailed insights and historical data analysis.
Aggregates: When raw data needs to be aggregated, aggregates can be created based on tag values to summarise and store this data.
How Tags Work¶
Data Collection: Tags collect external data through data connectors and IO Maps. For more information, see External Data Management.
Data Storage: The collected data is stored in the tag, preserving both the current value and historical records.
Data Retrieval: Services like Events, Notifications, Dashboards, Reports, and Flowsheets can access the data stored in tags as needed to perform their functions.
How to Use Tags¶
Before using tags, the person responsible for configuring WIP must set up the required tags (see Configure Tags).
You can then review tag data, update the current value and data quality and check trends associated with tags (see Review Tags).
You can also build a hierarchy of tags for easier grouping of data (see User Hierarchy).
